Acute ankle sprain & rehabilitation (OSGAR-2) – Effectiveness of a sensorimotor training intervention - individually adjusted by functional diagnostic parameters - on ankle joint function after first-time acute lateral ankle sprain.

Project No. FF-FR 0329

Status:

ongoing

Aims:

The aim of the project is the development of an evidence-based and functional therapy algorithm for the conservative treatment of an acute lateral ankle sprain. As a result, the recurrence rate and chronic symptoms should be reduced as well as faster reintegration into job and social life achieved.

Activities/Methods:

The study comprises two study arms, OSGAR-2.1 and OSGAR-2.2, which have their own methodological approach with separate study aims. OSGAR-2.1 is a cross-sectional analysis. Prior to the start of the intervention, an asymptomatic control group (CONTROL) completes the full test battery. CONTROL serves as external criterion for the valid measurement of functional ankle instability. For the main study, OSGAR-2.2, a randomized controlled trial will be applied using a longitudinal design. The aim is to prove the effectiveness of a multimodal training intervention (Smart Treatment, SMART; n = 41) compared to a standard therapy (Normal treatment, NORMT; n = 41) on ankle joint function. Before and after the 6- week intervention period, the full test battery is carried out with an additional 6-month and 12-month follow-up.
