The mixed-methods study Healthy Midwives aims to generate new insights into the health and working situation of midwives in Germany. It examines general conditions that influence workload and job satisfaction, interprofessional collaboration and the quality of care.
The study aims to achieve the following objectives:
The study is made up of three modules. Module 1 analyses the health and working situation of midwives. At the beginning, a literature review is conducted to identify profession-related stress factors. Based on this, participant observation of midwives in clinical and non-clinical settings and a nationwide, quantitative questionnaire survey will be conducted. The data from the cross-sectional study will be analysed descriptively and inferentially, as well as using regression analyses. In Module 2, a qualitative interview study will be conducted with midwives and gynaecologists in delivery rooms using the ‘Point System for Operationalizing Occupancy Rate in a Delivery Room (POAK)’. In Module 3, a process evaluation of the implementation of ‘POAK’ in a delivery room is carried out by means of a qualitative interview study with midwives and gynaecologists. For this purpose, interviews on the health and working situation are conducted at three points in time. The qualitative interviews of modules 2 and 3 will be analysed using content analysis.
