• Waterbased metalworking-fluids

Skin tolerability of waterbased metalworking-fluids and their additives

Shortcut: IPA-208-Hautvertraeglichkeit KSS

Duration: 2025 – 2027

Background and Aim

The risk of skin diseases in employees exposed to metalworking fluids (MWF) is up to three times higher than for the general working population. The occurrence of irritation-related (irritant) contact eczema is observed particularly in occupations with contact to waterbased MWF (w-MWF).

The project seeks to determine the optimal method for identifying and classifying w-MWF with the highest irritation potential.

Study design

  • Development of standardized testing procedures using bioengineering methods
  • Categorization and irritant ranking of the most frequently used w-MWF
  • Further analysis and characterization of w-MWF with the highest irritant potential in order to identify irritative additive mixes and components
