If workers leave the German social security system because they embark on a stay abroad initially intended to be permanent or because the conditions attached to a posting are not met, some accident insurance institutions offer voluntary insurance for short-term work abroad (Auslandsversicherung – AUV) so as to offer workers the necessary insurance cover for such periods also (Section 140 et seq. of Book VII of the German Social Code (Siebtes Buch Sozialgesetzbuch – SGB VII). Such insurance allows the employer to insure employees who work abroad on a temporary basis. However, this must not conflict with European rules and regulations or conventions on social security.
